The Architects of Modern Marina Power
From the First Patented Power Pedestal in 1987 to Global Industrial Leadership.
In 1987, our founders changed the industry forever by acquiring the first U.S. patent for a consolidated marina utility system: the ‘Docksider.’ Today, Marina Electrical Equipment continues that legacy of firsts from our 147,000 sq. ft. headquarters in Williamsburg, VA.
From the First U.S. Patent to Global Industry Standards
Since 1984, our founding members have led the marine electrical industry through a series of “Industry Firsts” that are now considered the gold standard for safety and functionality. We didn’t just join the market, we engineered it.
Our Pioneering Milestones:
- 1987 | The First Consolidated Utility System: Acquired the first U.S. Patent for the “Docksider” power pedestal, the first unit to house all marina utilities in one neat, weatherproof package.
- 1990 | Our founders introduced the “Lighthouse” power pedestal, which quickly became the market leader, and within only a few short years became the most popular power pedestal in the United States and Caribbean.
- The First Downward-Facing Dock Lighting: Engineered to illuminate the dock for safety without interfering with night-time boater navigation.
- The First Back-Lit Receptacle Faceplates: Revolutionized shore power connections by providing visibility for boaters in total darkness.
- The First Solid-State Electric Monitoring: Introduced high-precision digital metering into the power pedestal market.
- The First Wireless Remote Metering: Pioneered the ability for marina managers to read power usage remotely, increasing operational efficiency.
- The First Dual-Phase Transformer: Designed and manufactured the first single-unit dual-phase transformer for high-demand maritime applications.
- The First “Power Point” Mega-Yacht Unit: Created the industry’s first dedicated high-amperage solution for the super-yacht sector.
- The First Complimentary Electrical Layouts: We were the first manufacturer to offer free professional design services to ensure 100% code compliance for our clients.
Closing the Innovation Gap in Marine Power
While the industry stagnated for decades, marine environments became harsher and power demands grew. We returned to the market to engineer equipment that doesn’t just meet code, it redefines durability. We use 16-gauge 316L stainless steel and advanced ground-fault protection because ‘industry standard’ is simply not good enough for our customers.
